European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
