In the early hours of Saturday morning, reports emerged of major explosions shaking Tehran, following claims from Israel that it had conducted a preventative strike.
Powerful Explosions and Plumes of Smoke Reported in Central Tehran
According to eyewitness accounts, two loud blasts were audible in the city on Saturday. Correspondingly, two plumes of thick smoke were seen billowing over the centre and east of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of explosions suggests that this is a missile attack,” a media outlet stated, though it did not immediately provide additional information.
Context: Rising Strains and Recent Developments
This event takes place against a backdrop of sharply increased strains in the Middle East. Key developments preceding this strike involve:
- US Military Buildup: A massive build-up of American warships in the Middle East, including the movement of carrier strike groups.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Latest talks between the United States and Iran on Tehran's atomic program ended inconclusively, with indications of more talks planned.
- Public Statements: Prior to the attack, a senior US official had labeled Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued threats regarding its weapons development.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Reportedly, a deadline of roughly two weeks had been given to Iran to settle the nuclear dispute or confront severe consequences.
Reaction from Tehran
Reacting to earlier allegations, Iranian authorities had accused the United States of spreading “big lies” about its defensive capabilities. They rejected claims about missile development and protest deaths as unfounded.
These developments is fast-moving, with further updates expected as events unfold.
