Conservative responses to the limited disclosure of files related to the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain supporters of the previous administration highlighting the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while different voices lamented how heavy censorship cast former President Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable manner.
Justice Department Defends Redactions with Strong Rhetoric
Justice Department representatives defended the heavily censored sections with fervent exaggerated language. “At no point in U.S. history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been so transparent with the public about such a delicate law enforcement issue,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed memo describing the redaction procedure.
Questions Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's name and likeness appear in portions of the materials, the extensive redactions prompt serious questions about what may be concealed beneath them. Some Republicans swiftly called for increased openness.
“People are raging and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the redactions break the law, and suggested that a future Congress may attempt to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, this file dump egregiously fails to adhere to both the spirit and the wording of the act,” he added.
Some Conservative Commentators Swing In Support of the Release
But, a segment of rightwing pundits and Trump allies came out strongly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a DOJ led by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of pages that are entirely redacted, and numerous of the individuals shown in pictures have their faces blacked out.
Yet a few are not, including prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, especially, enabled some conservative voices to go on the attack.
“It’s pretty rich how the Democrats falsely claimed Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents show Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a female that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Clinton Spokesperson Issues Statement
Clinton has consistently stated he knew of zero criminal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration hasn’t been hiding those documents for months only to release them late on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“This is about shielding officials from future revelations, or from information they will try and conceal forever. So they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photos as they want, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the statement added.
Overall Rightwing Comment Remains Subdued
However, overall discourse on the political right was relatively muted following the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the loud calls for action that preceded the legislative approval to enact a law requiring the documents' release.
Loomer, who not long ago secured press credentials at the Pentagon, had been among the most vocal proponents for a complete release. In February, she chastised the administration generally and Bondi specifically after a group of rightwing personalities were given physical folders of files that contained no new data.
