The platform is rolling out a new feature that enables them to reduce the quantity of AI-made content appearing in their timelines. This move comes as the company revealed that it now features more than 1 bn AI videos.
Pilot Phase and Launch
The new functionality is being tested over the coming weeks before a full-scale release. This development coincides with a rise in AI content, spurred by new content generation software.
AI Content on Other Platforms
It has been noted that nearly one in 10 of the most rapidly expanding channels on a popular video site primarily display clips produced artificially. A significant portion of this content is deemed low-quality AI content, a label for poor-quality, bulk-generated content that is often absurd or surreal.
Our research shows that many people appreciate content produced via AI tools, ranging from computer-generated images to science explainers, and we intend to provide users the option to see more or less of that, based on their own preferences,” said a spokesperson.
AI on the Platform
TikTok announced that there are now over a billion videos on its service tagged as artificially created. Collectively, in excess of 100 million media items are submitted to the service each day, making AI content a limited portion of its overall inventory.
User Control Features
Viewers will be capable of limit or boost the volume of artificial media they watch by using the “manage topic” feature in the application and selecting the AI content topic. Other topics that currently be controlled under the filter cover current affairs, fashion, aesthetics, and movement.
AI Disclosure Rules
The platform’s guidelines require users to tag lifelike artificially created content, and it prohibits harmful AI impersonations of well-known individuals or critical incidents. Any authentic-looking AI video that is not labeled can be removed under its community policies.
Furthermore, the platform will now apply an AI-generated tag to content made using its own AI tools, or flagged by an collaborative effort for spotting artificial media. This measure is intended to help prevent users from attempting to bypass the labeling process.
Educational Initiatives
The platform is also introducing a two million dollar AI literacy fund for experts and institutions to develop informative material about using AI responsibly. This initiative will support educational bodies focused on training coding and technology.
Content Safety Approach
The video-sharing app has justified its moderation strategy, during discussion over intentions to cut jobs for hundreds of review team members in the UK. The company is set to reduce 439 jobs in its user protection department in the UK capital, with trade unions and online safety experts raising concerns that staff are being displaced by machine-led review.
A senior executive stated that people-led review would continue to be important, but AI can shield workers by removing the most graphic content ahead of it gets reviewed by people. TikTok announced a notable drop in explicit and harmful content seen by content reviewers over the last 12 months due to reliance on its automated systems.
We believe it is crucial to combine people and machines to ensure user safety,” the executive stated. “We’ll have humans as integral to the approach, but we further consider it’s very important to limit contact with harmful content as quickly as possible, which is the area in which a lot of the machine support is really helping us operate efficiently.”
